K.C.'s Cast Off

Finally the time came for K.C. to have his cast removed. I don't think I ever shared how it was that his arm ended up in a cast. K.C. had watched many, many times as his cousin Ethan went on the monkey bars at the complex where we rented a condo for the summer. Ethan just made it look too easy. K.C. gave it a try a few times while I held his legs but couldn't quite do it by himself. Then one day while my parents were visiting, my dad graciously offered to take all the grand kids to the playground... that was the day K.C. thought he could do it by himself. Unfortunately he let go half way through and fell on his left arm. It swelled up right away, but we thought it might be a sprain. The next day he was still in pain so we took him to the ER. Yep, fractured radius. They first put his arm on a sling and a couple of days later we took him to the orthopedic surgeon to get it in a cast so he could swim in the pool and enjoy the end of the summer.
Going through security at the airport was a little different because they had to set him aside an carefully inspect the cast to make sure he wasn't hiding anything inside. The security people were quite nice though and they made him feel very special (celebrity status). K.C. also felt pretty cool going to school with his little "show and tell".
Well, today was the day to have it removed and he could hardly wait...until he saw the "saw". I will never forget how big his eyes opened when the doctor turned it on. However, he stayed cool through the whole process. The doctor showed him the saw and put it against his palm to show that it wouldn't hurt him, still, it was quite noisy. After the doctor left the room, K.C. looked at me with eyes full of tears and with a trembling lip said "I thought he was going to cut my arm off!" After a few sobs and a tight hug from "Mama" he realized he had his arm back. It took him a few days though to remember to use his left hand again. We are glad to have him whole again.

Vanya's 7th Birthday

Vanya is 7 today. I can hardly believe it. When he talks to me sometimes I still picture the cute little two year old who spoke mostly Spanish. This year we decided not to have parties and go to every other year. We still celebrated at home with cake, ice cream, pizza and of course Presents! Vanya is a great little boy who loves to be active, he still enjoys anything related to Star Wars, the outdoors and being with his brother K.C. his biggest fan. Happy Birthday Vanya!
